Jackie Robinson became the first African American to play in Major League Baseball in the modern era. In 1945 Robinson played one season in the Negro Leagues for the Kansas City Monarchs before breaking the baseball color line when he started at first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947. In 1997, MLB retired his uniform number 42 across all major league teams.
